About usI C – The Integrative Care Science Center is unique Swedish forum focusing on complementary, alternative (CAM) and integrative care. We conduct research, training and communication activities. Our homepage features current policy news, research news and our own service for critical analysis of CAM news in the mass media, CritiCAM.
What is our aim?
We seek to contribute to evidence-based health and health care developmenet, including relevant elements of proven complementary, alternative and integrative medicine according to WHO recommendations.
Who are we trying to reach?
Our primary target groups are certified health care professionals and decision-makers in Sweden.
What you won´t find here?
We do not provide individual patients with medical health care or advice but refer them to their respective physicians. Neither do we supply treatment recommendations.

Torkel Falkenberg, BSc in Biology, PhD (Faculty of Medicine) in Pharmacology/Neuroscience, has an Associate Professorship in Health Care Research at the Karolinska Institutet. He is the research constellation leader for the Integrative Care research group constellation, Division of Nursing, Department of Neurobiology, Care Sciences and Society at Karolinska Institutet. His research collaborations, in low and middle income countries as well as in Sweden have resulted in several PhD theses, contributions to international guidelines, and efforts to inform the EU of strategic CAM reiearch financing (CAMbrella). Torkel has been engaged as a consultant to health care planners and decision makers nationally and internationally, including the World Bank and the World Health Organization (WHO) which has resulted in several global WHO TM/CAM strategy reports. He is a board of directors of the International Society for Complementary Medicine Research (ISCMR), part of the organization committee for the international research congresses ICCMR2013.org and ircimh.org and a member of the editorial board of several scientific journals.

Johanna Hök is a licensed pharmacist. She holds a Ph.D. degree in medical sciences with expertise in cancer patients’ attitudes towards complementary and alternative medicine (CAM). She has been working at Karolinska Institutet with research and education in the field of CAM since 2002. She has been working as a consultant for the program for Traditional Medicine at the World Health Organization. Her pedagogic merits include course leadership for two courses at Karolinska Institutet: Complementary, alternative and integrative medicine and, Herbal Remedies. Since 2010 Johanna is part of the pan-European project CAMbrella. Johanna has undergone training in the Japanese body therapy Shiatsu at Axelsons Gymnastiska Institut. She is the secretary of the International Society for Complementary Medicine Research (ISCMR).
Since January 2011 Johanna works at the Center with research, information and education on integrative care.

Tobias Sundberg is a health care researcher with academic qualifications from Uppsala University and Karolinska Institutet (PhD in Medical Science). In addition to his research training Dr Sundberg has a professional background in the Swedish systems of physical therapy and massage/manual therapy and is a European trained osteopath. He has been active in sports, manual and integrative medicine since the 1990s and has international experiences in these fields from Sweden, Norway, United Kingdom, USA and Switzerland. Dr Sundberg’s research interests mainly focuses on clinical trials and comparative effectiveness research including mixed methods, registry studies and health economic evaluations in conventional and integrative medicine.

Jackie Swartz is a child psychiatrist and general practitioner och one of the founders of the Vidarkliniken Hospital. Since 1997, he has participated in various research projects on allergies in children in collaboration with Karolinska Institutet, Karolinska Hospital, Sachsska Children’s Hospital, Stockholm University and Uppsala University. Since 2008, he has been affiliated with Karolinska Institutet. As of 2010 he is a PhD student at Department of Neuroscience, Uppsala University with the project ”Allergy, stress and sense of coherence in families with children with an anthroposophic lifestyle”.

Maria Arman is a registered nurse and midwife with a master in nursing and a PhD in Health Care Science, and has an Associate Professorship in Nursing Science at the Karolinska Institutet. Research profile focuses the anthroposophic health care system as a whole and, above all from patient perspective as well as an interest to develop ethical, existential and spiritual questions in health care. Maria has had ongoing research on Vidarkliniken since 1995 when cooperation with professor Hamrin at Linköping University began. Evaluations of the patients’ quality of life, coping and satisfaction with care have been followed up with qualitative studies and long-term studies (se publication list). Maria participates in international networks for researchers in the anthroposophic treatment.

David Finer is a health journalist at Stockholm County Council (www.janusinfo.se). He has a BA in social sciences and languages from Uppsala University and a Licentiate of Medical Science from Department of International Health (IHCAR), Karolinska Institutet in Stockholm. His research deals with the interface between medicine, the mass media and the citizens. He is a lecturer, translator and author or co-author of books on science journalism, health journalism, and dyslexia and childhood diseases. He has been a consultant to the governments of Vietnam, Lao PDR, Moldavia, Peru, Bolivia and WHO on the role of mass media for the rational use of drugs. He has been chairperson of the Swedish Association of Medical Journalists (www.finermedia.se).

Annele Claeson is secretary to Associate Professor Torkel Falkenberg and provides support to the other research members of the staff. She also edits the website. Annele has been working as a secretary at the Division of Nursing at Karolinska Institutet in the Division management since 2008 to spring 2011. She has been working as a secretary with research in elderly care at KC-Kompetenscentrum for nine years.
